About This Program

The Department of Psychology provides students with a strong foundation in the field while emphasizing Black/African-centered psychology. Our department offers major and minor programs in psychology in a setting which allows students to excel academically, professionally, socially, personally and culturally.

 


Degree Requirements

At the undergraduate level, the department offers the Bachelor of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Science degree. Both psychology degrees at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University help prepare students for advanced studies. The Bachelor of Arts includes a foreign language requirement, (12) semester hours.

Prior to declaring a major in psychology, students must satisfactorily complete the following prerequisites with a minimum grade of C: Introduction to Psychology, either Human Growth and Development or EDP 2002 Educational Psychology, College Algebra, and any level BSC course. Students must earn at least a 2.00 GPA ("C") in each course completed in psychology and have at least a 2.00 GPA overall to qualify for graduation. Required courses consist of Black Psychology, Psychological Statistics, Research Design Methods, Abnormal Psychology, Experimental Psychology, and History of Psychology. In addition, twelve hours of elective courses in psychology are required from at least 2 of 3 course clusters (Applied, Social/Personality/Black, Biological, or Graduate School Preparation/Honors).


 


What can I do with a degree in Psychology?

Graduates from the psychology program are well prepared for graduate school or may find employment in a variety of occupations including but not limited to:

  • Guidance Counselor*
  • Mental Health Counselor*
  • Rehabilitation Specialist
  • Research Assistant

*Some fields may require additional training or graduate school
